Inktober days 1-3

I'm back from a long absence. I was working on a comic for a contest, but I had to drop out of the contest because of some major life hiccups. I'm still working on my comic, but not at the pace I was going before. I have 5 episodes up so far. Here's the link on Line Webtoon if you're interested: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/smallkeedtime-hawaii/list?title_no=193686

On another note, it's time for Inktober! These drawings are for the first 3 days. I heard about Girltober yesterday and noticed that other people posted inspiring women. I decided to participate today, so I drew the woman who inspired me to make comics, Lynda Barry! Her comics are funny and moving. You may not think the drawings are very pretty, but I love their charm and I love the characters. She is good friends with The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening. They went to college together and you can see the influence each has on the other as far as drawing style.

This has been kind of a crummy year so far, but it's supposed to rain today which I am looking forward to. We need that rain!

I will be posting again regularly in September.

So far, I've posted over 80 drawings/panels of my comic.

I have 2 episodes up so far. If you would like to see my progress, here is the link to my page: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/smallkeedtime-hawaii/list?title_no=193686

Episode one is called Boring Summer. It's below episode 2. The most recent will be on top.

Monday's Music Moves Me - Crossover Artist hit songs

Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but his family comes from Senegal, West Africa. He had a hit dance song in India called Chammak Challo. It's in English and Hindi. Below are two videos. One is the "making of" video. He did a good job! The other is the music video with Bollywood dancers. If my knee wasn't messed up, I would be dancing to this song right now.

Selena was an American singer from Texas who was killed by a crazy fan. She had to learn Spanish to gain an audience. There was a movie done based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez. The song is I Could Fall in Love by Selena Quintanilla.

Stan by Eminem and Dido. Rap/pop crossover. Warning, this is the uncensored version because I think these words need to be said. It's a moving story about a crazy fan.

Rap/rock crossover by Aerosmith & Run DMC. I love this song.

Old pop (Elvis) and reggae - UB40 (I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You. I was a big reggae fan back in the day...

My family is from Hawaii, so I have to include this song by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole aka Bruddah IZ. Over the Rainbow. I hear it everywhere now, commercials, TV, movies, etc. He used to have concerts in town in an intimate arena where he was in a concert theatre close to the audience, but I never went to them. My parents used to go see him because he was my dad's favorite. One of my regrets is never going to see him because I was in college and "too busy." I should've made time because he's gone now.

When my son graduated last week, they played this song after the ceremony. My husband and I cried because we took it as a sign that my dad was there in spirit. He passed away when my son was 6 and my son looks like him. My cousin from Hawaii was with us. As soon as we heard, "Okay, this one's for Kevin" the three of us immediately turned our heads because we recognized the song before any of the notes were hit. It was funny.

My dad was depressed when he was dying, but I brought the CD player over next to his bed and played IZ's songs. It made him feel better.

He missed Hawaii and the people he knew there. I didn't realize how much he missed them until recently. On Facebook last month, I met his cousins who lived across the street from him when he was a kid. One of them told me they had a big get-together with their classmates which they do every year. She said my dad had called and talked to about a dozen of them. They were all surprised and happy he called. I guess he called to say goodbye because he was dying at the time. He used to be a handsome, popular guy when he was a kid and always the life of the party. Sometimes he would joke about all the girlfriends he had. He was also a troublemaker, a colorful character, so I created a character in one of my comics based on him. I'm hoping to gather more funny stories about him so I can put them in my comics.

Celebrate The Small Things - Latchkey Kids

This week I'm celebrating the launch of my short webcomic called Latchkey Kids! You can read it for free on Line Webtoon in the Discover + Comedy section.

https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/latchkey-kids/list?title_no=187075

I'll be posting the second episode next week. I chose simple characters so that I could draw them faster. Once I get used to the entire process of comic making from laying the pages out, inking, digital coloring, converting to the Webtoon format, and uploading each panel into Webtoon, I would like to draw more detailed panels.

I'm also celebrating a new comic contest. It's just what I need to light the fire under my butt to get me moving on my comics. I probably wouldn't have launched my comic today if I hadn't found out about the contest yesterday. I needed to launch it before I post the comics for the contest because the same characters are in it. It wouldn't make sense to post that comic in the middle of my longer graphic novel type of comic. It's either at the beginning or end. I was already done with the inking and coloring. I just needed to arrange and convert the panels in the proper format.

Friday was the first day off from school for my kids, so we watched our first daily summer movie together. I wanted to show them Real Genius, but it wasn't available so we watched Liar, Liar with Jim Carrey instead. I'm going to try to watch a movie with them every weekday this summer. That may not happen with this contest, though. I'll have to see if I can swing it. The movies I have planned for the coming weeks are Big, The Day After Tomorrow, Groundhog Day, Heaven Can Wait, Father of the Bride, Dirty Dancing, Race To Witch Mountain, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Last Action Hero, Selena, A Wrinkle in Time, Castaway, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Chronicles of Narnia, Ender's Game, Say Anything, and a few new movies.

Due to this contest, I may not be posting much until September unless I decide not to do it or I can't keep up.

What are you celebrating?

Creative Every Day - Stalling

I was listening to a podcast this morning when I heard someone say, "A good friend will help you move. A real friend will help you move a body." I laughed out loud. That is the funniest thing I think I will hear all day today.

I'm still working on designs for my characters (see below). I think I'm just having self-doubts and am stalling on putting my webcomic out to the world. Once I start posting them, I have to keep going or else I won't meet my deadline for posting every week. I won't have time to make design changes. Aaaagh! *biting nails*

These are the books I just read:

How do they draw so fast?! And they're younger than me! I've gotta get movin'! I think their style is do-able for me. I see where they made shortcuts to get some of the drawings done quicker. I hope these tricks sink into my brain while I'm drawing my panels.

I'm so nervous! Maybe it's the coffee I drank. I can launch my comic today if I wanted to. My kids are coming home early, though. Stalling...

Random Tuesday Thoughts Rebel - The Little Rascals

I have been thrown off schedule completely this week. Since Monday was a holiday, I thought Tuesday was Monday and then my son graduated from middle school yesterday. My husband took off from work for the graduation and then we took our second son out of school an hour early to have a celebratory lunch. That made me think it was the weekend. So now it's Thursday which is the last day of school for my kids, not Friday. The logic part of my brain is saying it's not the weekend yet, but the other side is telling me it has been the weekend all week.

Anyway, that's my excuse for being late on these posts. lol Kinda lame, sorry.

My very good friend from college is working on a comic like I am. Throughout college, we seemed to be very in tune with each other. Sometimes I would know he was going to call seconds before the phone rang. We still keep in touch. The other day, on Instagram he posted a drawing of Spanky that he drew from a picture of The Little Rascals. I was floored because two days prior to his posting, I was going to draw the same picture! I didn't draw it because I didn't have time, but I still had the internet page open on my phone. This is the picture (Spanky is the boy on the far left):

Out of all the pictures of The Little Rascals on the internet, that picture appealed to both of us around the same time without us telling each other about it. We didn't even mention The Little Rascals to each other. Plus, out of the millions of pictures on the internet, we chose The Little Rascals. Weird, huh?

Monday's Music Moves Me - May 28 - My Choice(s)

This is one of my favorite songs from a band that many people don't know about or have forgotten.

The Cult of Personality by Living Colour.

I never get tired of The Devil Went Down to Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band and I play it for my kids once in a while. They like it, too and they like the story.

Here's another song I never get tired of. Dragostea Din Tei otherwise known as the Numa Numa Dance made popular worldwide by Gary Brolsma who videotaped himself lipsyncing to the song and sending it to his friend who put it on the internet. This Romanian band is called Ozone.

This is the cutest animated short about love that I've ever seen. It's in French with English subtitles. A Quoi Ça Sert L'Amour by Edith Piaf and Theo Sarapo.

I like the original version of Electric Feel by MGMT, but Preston Pohl sang an amazing version on The Voice! Whooo! Smokin'!

This is a local Los Angeles band that they've been playing on the radio called Gamblers Mark. I believe their style is rockabilly. I've heard them sing songs by the Stray Cats. If you like rockabilly, you might like them. Check 'em out...

Those are my musical picks of the day.

Creative Every Day - Colorful Sketchbook

Yesterday I painted backgrounds for my future drawings in my sketchbook. I was looking at www.creativebug.com and was inspired by Pam Garrison's creative sketchbooking intro video. There are hundreds of classes you can take on the Creative Bug site.

https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/creative-sketchbooking/creative-sketchbooking-playing-with-pens-and-paint-part-1

A couple of years ago I decided to add color to my drawing pages. I got a lot of great sketch pages from that. Pam's videos reminded me that I used to do that because her journals are filled with color.

So, yesterday I painted a bunch of pages in a sketchbook that I made a few years ago. I made this sketchbook out of fabric from Joann's Fabrics and learned to make the sketchbook from YouTube videos. I stitched the pages together and used cheap watercolor paper from Michael's.

I intended to draw monsters in this sketchbook, but I never got past the first page because I'm not good at coming up with monsters.

Hopefully I can fill these pages with good drawings.
