Celebrate The Small Things - April 21, 2107

This week I was able to create a font of my own handwriting for my graphic novel. The process is pretty simple, but I worked on it for two days to get it just right. I made several sheets of different handwriting and came across many problems as is the norm with getting to know computer programs.

It was down to two fonts that I liked the best. I knew which one would appeal more to children, but I asked my kids for their opinion and they chose the one I thought they would. I'm so glad that is out of the way so I can move forward.

Now I don't have to worry about finding the perfect font and getting a commercial license for using it. I spent hours looking for the right font only to find out they glitched out on the program I was using and the licensing was hard for me to figure out. Some are free for personal use, but the one I wanted showed free on one site, but you had to pay for it on another site. After using it for a while, I decided I didn't like it. It glitched out anyway when it was time to print it, so I abandoned it.

The site I ended up using was The first font is free. You can change it, but if you do, you won't be able to use the previous font you made at the same time. I initially went to, but the kerning (space between letters) is squished and not adjustable. It might be okay for some things, but not for middle grade graphic novels which is what I'm working on. If the text isn't clear for kids, you'd better believe they're gonna move on.

I don't know why this week went by in a blur, but I was able to get a few drawings in for my graphic novel that came out really cute. What a switch from last week when my drawings were stiff, boring and ugly! I wish I knew what I did right this week to get those good drawings. Could it be the way the planets aligned? Lack of sleep? Well, no, that can't be it. I lack sleep every week. Hmm, I ate a ton of blueberries this week. Maybe that's it. Thanks, Costco.

After over a month of skipping the gym because of the graphic novel contest, I hit the weights pretty hard this week. It feels great to have gotten through those workouts. I couldn't lift as much as I used to and that was discouraging, but my pants were a tiny bit looser this morning, so I'll celebrate that. My arms are sore as heck and I'm still pudgy, but I feel like Arnold Schwarzeneggar. LOL

I did the special hour-and-a-half Easter Zumba last Sunday. It was so fun. One of the instructors was a hilarious, energetic gay guy who played music that is right up my alley like disco, Flashdance, Psy, disco Star Wars, etc. My husband said he has never seen me move so fast. The gym was pretty empty, but that class was packed. My husband who is a Star Wars fan was lifting weights when we were dancing to the disco Star Wars song. He has dog hearing, so he heard it through the glass wall and over the blaring music on the gym floor. He rolled his eyes, but I was having fun.

The instructor picks out a new girl and when the song says, "Luke, I am your father!" he points to her and she's supposed to say, "Nooooooooo!" That's what he tells her before the song starts. He says, "It's from a movie." Ha ha! It was the start of a good week.

What are you celebrating?

  1. It's really an advantage that you have kids to help you choose what will please your target audience. Congrats on getting back into the gym. Have a great weekend!

  2. Kimberly, I like Zumba! I used to do it all the time from the comfort of my living room but then we got an elliptical machine and there's no room for Zumba. Hopefully in the very near future we'll be in our dream home and I'll have plenty of room for Zumba workouts. Thanks for visiting and have a great weekend!

  3. I love Zumba! Congrats on creating your own font too. That's a very detailed process, but I'm happy you made it work :)

  4. That sounds like a fast paced exercise class and fun too! Hope you are having a good weekend.
